لقد جسد حميد فرنجية فكرة وحدة اللبنانيين وفكرتي العدالة والتقدم لبلاده ومثل لبنان الذي كان بالإمكان الافتخار به. وتظل شخصية حميد فرنجية الوطنية حية بالنسبة لمن عايشوه عن قرب وحتى أولئك الذي عرفوه عن بعد أو سمعوا به. وظل في ذاكرة اللبنانيين رجلاً لم يكن للتمييز الديني يوماً تأثيراً عليه.
وفي هذا الكتاب الذي جاء ضمن جزءين صورة عن فكر هذا الرجل وذلك من خلال سيرة حياته التي يمكن أن تقسم إلى قسمين متميزين. القسم الذي باشر فيه مواكبة الإنجازات لبلاده وشعبه، والقسم الذي اضطر فيه إلى تكريس طاقته كلها للدفاع عن المكتسبات المحققة ولمنع القضاء عليها. وبين هاتين المرحلتين، ثمة فاصل زمني بالغ الأهمية يمتد من 1948 إلى 1952، وفي خلاله حدثت أخطر التحولات وتتالى بوتيرة مطردة، سواء في لبنان نفسه أم خارج لبنان.
وهذا المؤلّف يعتمد هذا التقسيم في جزئيه الكبيرين. فيضم الجزء الأول بدايات حياة حميد فرنجية السياسية، بانتخابه نائباً للمرة الأولى، عام 1934 ثم انطلاقته كنائب ونشاطه في الفترة التي سبقت الحرب العالمية الثانية حيث كان ينبغي تأسيس كل شيء في لبنان، وفي جميع الميادين، مثل تأسيس وزارة الخارجية التي كانت صنيعته والتي باشرت عملها في مبنى البرلمان آنذاك.
أما القسم الثاني من حياة حميد فرنجية السياسية، فقد خصص للحؤول دون أن يفقد لبنان الميزات الهائلة التي كان ما يزال يملكها، بدءاً بوحدة أبنائه. وهذا القسم، الذي يشكل موضوع الجزء الثاني من المؤلف، يبدأ بانتخابات عام 1952 الرئاسية التي أعقبت استقالة الرئيس بشارة الخوري.
