إن الإهتمام بتاريخ العلوم بوجه عام وبتاريخ العلوم في الحضارة الإسلامية بوجه خاص أخذ يزداد يوماً بعد يوم في أكثر من دائرة أكاديمية في مختلف أنحاء العالم، وإن إختيار موضوع ابن النديم وتصنيف العلوم في الحضارة الإسلامية ليكون محوراً يدور حوله هذا المؤتمر هو إختيار موفق لأننا ما زلنا بحاجة إلى المزيد من فهم الإطار العام الذي نشأت فيه العلوم في الحضارة العربية والإسلامية وفلسفة العلوم عند العرب والمسلمين كذلك فإننا بحاجة أيضاً إلى التعرف على أساليب الإبداع العلمي وفهمها عند العلماء العرب والمسلمين وكيفية العمل في المؤسسات العلمية.
إن أهمية مؤلف ابن النديم تنبع من مساهمته الجليلة في الحفاظ على النتاج العلمي الزاخر من الضياع والإندثار حيث يمثل فهرست هذا العالم العربي إنجازاً علمياً يسّر للعلماء والباحثين سبل الرجوع إلى أهم المؤلفات في شتى العلوم على إختلافها.
إن الكاتبة الألمانية الشهية زيغريد هونكه كانت تكرر في كل مناسبة أن الغرب إذا أعطى للعرب من نتائج تطوره العلمي الكبير فإن ذلك لن يكون إلا جزءاً يسيراً جداً من رد الجميل؛ ونحن بالطبع لا ننتظر هذا العطاء بل نتطلع إلى مستقبل نساهم فيه مساهمة فعالة في تطوير الحضارة الإنسانية عندما تتوفر للجامعات ولمراكز البحوث التي تزداد في ربوع وطننا العربي الإمكانيات المادية والمعنوية للعطاء والقيام بدورها الحقيقي في البناء العلمي والفكري والإقتصادي لوطننا العربي الموحد.
