ركب العرب البحر تجاراً ومحاربين فجابوا خلاله الآفاق حتى بلغوا بلاد الهند ومشارف الصين واليابان شرقاً واجتازوه إلى أوروبا غرباً وخاضوا فيه غمار المعارك الضارية فحققوا النصر المبين على أعدائهم منذ فجر تاريخهم ومعركة ذات السواري خير شاهد على ذلك.
لقد عبروا البحار كما عبروا الصحارى والقفار، فكانوا دولة بحرية كما كانوا دولة برية، ينشرون حضارتهم وينقلون علومهم وثقافتهم إلى الأمصار التي فتحوها والبلدان التي أقاموا فيها.
وحول دور العرب في علم البحار وخبرتهم في مجالاتها المختلفة كان مدار البحث الرئيسي في المؤتمر السنوي العاشر لتاريخ العلوم عند العرب الذي أقيم في مدينة اللاذقية خلال شهر نيسان من عام 1987.
وفي هذا الكتاب يجمع أبحاث هذا المؤتمر ليقدمها بين يدي القارئ العربي ليكون على بينة من دور العرب في كل ميدان، وقد ساهم في هذه الأبحاث عدد كبير من العلماء والباحثين من الأقطار العربية وكل منهم قد أدلى بدلوه في الميدان العلمي الذي اختاره، وكل بحث من هذه البحوث يبرز مقدرة العرب على الإبداع في ميادين العلوم المختلفة وتاريخ العلوم عند العرب وتراثهم الغني يؤكد دورهم ومساهماتهم في دعم الحضارة العالمية.
