إنطلاقاً من أهمية التراث العلمي العربي وضرورة دراسته وربطه بمواقعنا ومستقبلنا كان معهد التراث ومنذ تأسيسه يحاول مع الجمعية السورية لتاريخ العلوم أن يتتبع حركة تاريخ العلوم العربية في أول عطاءاتها ومن ثم إمتداداتها مع التطور الحضاري ليكشف عن الدور الهام والمتميز الذي قام به العلماء العرب ويضع المادة التراثية أمام الباحثين والدارسين العرب وغير العرب ليزيدهم تبصراً بالتراث العلمي العربي وقدرة على دراسة هذا التراث وتحقيقه، ونساهم من خلال ذلك في إكتشاف دور تراثنا العلمي في بناء الحضارة الإنسانية المعاصرة.
وتمشياً مع أهداف المعهد فقد عقد المؤتمر السنوي الثاني عشر لتاريخ العلوم عند العرب في مدينة دير الزور ما بين 12- 14 نيسام عام 1988.
وقد تضمن المؤتمر إحتفالاً خاصاً بذكرى العالمين العربيين ابن النفيس وعبد الرحمن الصوفي وأبحاثاً أخرى في مختلف مجالات تاريخ العلوم قدمها علماء وباحثون من داخل القطر العربي السوري ومن خارجه من البلدان العربية وغير العربية.
