وكان الهدف الأساسي لإنعقاد المؤتمر التعريف بالإسهام الذي قدمه العرب للحضارة الإنسانية وتم تسليط الأضواء على الموضوعات التالية: "الإحتفال بحلول القرن الخامس عشر الهجري"، "ذكرى مرور ألف عام على ولادة ابن سينا"، "تاريخ العلوم الأساسية"، "تاريخ العلوم الطبية"، "تاريخ العلوم التطبيقية".
