يضم هذا الكتاب مقتطفات من كتاب (إعتبار الناسك في ذكر الآثار والمناسك)، الذي دُرج على تسميته بــ (رحلة ابن جبير)، وابن جبير هو محمد بن أحمد بن جبير الكناني، ولد في مدينة بلنسية، وشُغف منذ صباه بالعلم شغفاً ملك عليه حواسه، ولم يفارقه طوال حياته؛ فلقد عُني بعلوم الدين من فقهٍ وحديثٍ وقراءاتٍ، وما اتصل بها من علوم اللغة والنحو والأدب، واحترف الكتابة؛ فعمل لبعض الأمراء من الموحدين، الذين كانوا يحكمون الأندلس في ذلك الوقت، واشتغل بالتدريس؛ ولا سيما بعد رحلته الثانية إلى الشرق، وكانت وفاته بالإسكندرية في أثناء رحلته الثالثة إلى المشرق سنة (614هـ).
قام ابن جبير بثلاثٍ رحلاتٍ إلى المشرق، قصد فيها جميعاً الحج، والرحلة التي بين أيدينا هي رحلته الأولى، بدأها بمغادرة غرناطة في الثامن من شوال سنة (578هـ)، وأنهاها بالعودة إليها في الثاني والعشرين من المحرم سنة 581هـ، وابتدأ بتقييدها كما يذكر في الثلاثين من شوال سنة (578هـ)، على متن سفينة في البحر.
مرّ ابن جبير في أثناء رحلته بمصر، وشبه الجزيرة العربية، والعراق، والشام، وأخيراً صقلية، فشاهد كبريات مدنها، وصوَّرها في كتابه تصويراً بتفاوت طولاً وقصراً؛ وفق المدة التي أقامها فيها، والإنطباع الذي خلَّفته في نفسه، والأهمية التي رأى أنها تستحقها.
فعُني بوصف مرافق تلك المدن، من أسوارٍ، وحصونٍ، ومساجد، ومدارسَ، وحماماتٍ، وأسواقٍ، ومارستانات، ومنازلَ، وشوارعَ، ومشاهدَ للمقابر والموالد، وآثار الأنبياء والعلماء والأولياء، والمعابد والكنائس والآثار غير الإسلامية، كما عُني بالغرباء، ومواطنيه المغاربة؛ كيف يعاملهم سكان الأقطار التي مرّ بها وحكامها؟ فيشيد بصاحب الفضل عليهم، ويعدد ألوان البرِّ بهم، وينبذ من يجفوهم.
