هذا الكتاب يمثل وثيقة تاريخية عظيمة وهامة، وابن جبير هو رحالة قام بثلاث رحلات في حياته استمر إحداها لثلاث سنوات وكان من علماء الأندلس في الفقه والحديث، وأما هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا ففيه يصحبنا المؤلف في رحلاته ويحدثنا عنها ويصف لنا كل ما مر به من مدن وما شاهد من غرائب المشاهد وبدائع الصنائع والأحوال الاجتماعية والسياسية وعني عناية خاصة بوصف النواحي الدينية والمساجد والمشاهد والقبور ومجالس الوعظ والمارستانات وكان هذا في سنة 1182م.
