ابن جبير من أشهر الرحالة المسلمين الذين قاموا برحلات إلى المشرق العربي ، دوَّن خلالها الكثير من المعلومات التي تعتبر وثائق من الدرجة الأولى لأنه حسن الملاحظة وصريح العبارة ، فكانت رحلته مصدراً مهماً للباحثين في مجال التاريخ و الاجتماع والحضارة العــربيـة في القــرن الســادس و السابع الهجري .
ولد ابن جبير بمدينة بلنسية بالأندلس عام 540 هـ ، و هو ينحدر من أسرة عربية عريقة سكنت الأندلس عام 123هـ ، قادمة من المشرق مع القائد المشهور بَلْج بن بشر بن عياض .
أتم ابن جبير دراسته بعد أن أتم حفظه للقرآن الكريم بمدينة بلنسية على يد أبي الحسن بن أبي العيش، وفي شاطبة درس ابن جبير علوم الدين على يد أبيه وشغف بها لكن ميوله برزت أيضا في علم الحساب، وفي العلوم اللغوية والأدبية ، وأظهر مواهب شعرية ونثرية رشحته للعمل كاتبا لحاكم غرناطة وقتذاك أبي سعيد عثمان بن عبد المؤمن ، أمير الموحدين.
