تبحثُ د.نهلة الشقران في دراستها هذه، القيمةَ اللغويةَ لأدب الرحلات، وما يتضمّنه هذا الأدبُ من أساليبَ تعكسُ شخصيةَ الرَّحّالة. إذ درَس باحثون كُثُرٌ أدبَ الرحلات من جوانبه السياسية والاجتماعية والجغرافية والدينية، لكنّهم أغفلوا الجانبَ اللغويَّ فيه، ولم يتنبّهوا إلى ذلك إلا في فترةٍ متأخِّرة كان التركيزُ فيها منصّبَّاً على أدب الرحلات الحديث والمعاصر.
اختارت الباحثةُ رحلةَ ابن جبير الزاهد الورع -كما يصفه المترجِمون- إعجاباً بشخصيته، ثم تتبّعتْ أسلوبَهُ اللغويَّ الذي يصف فيه ما شاهدَ من مُسَمَّيات؛ فدرَسَت الجملَتين الفعليّة والاسميّة عنده، ثم تناولتْ تراكيبَ متكرِّرةً في نَصِّهِ، كتلكَ الدالّة على التعجُّب والدعاء والعدد، ثم وضعتْ معجماً صغيراً خاصاً بمفردات ابن جبير في رحلته.
جاء هذا الكتاب في ثلاثة فصول:
تناولَ الفصل الأول أهمية رحلة ابن جبير، والذي تخلَّله تصدير حول التعريف بابن جبير، ثم الكلام عن أدب الرحلات بعامَّة، ودوافعها، ومن ثم الكلام عن رحلة ابن جبير وتدوينها.
فيما درَسَ الفصل الثاني تركيب الجُمْلَة عند ابن جبير؛ الفعلية والاسمية، وأنماط كلٍّ وصورها وفروعها.
وكَشَفَ الفصل الثالث عن التراكيب اللغوية المتكررة عند ابن جبير، والتي اشتملت على جُمَل التعجّب والمبالغة، وجُمَل الدعاء والثناء على الله، وجُمَل العدد والكمّ والتأريخ.
