يعد "توفيق الحكيم" واحد من أكثر الكتاب نتاجاً، وقد تنوعت مؤلفاته ما بين: القصة، المقالة الاجتماعية، السيرة الذاتية والمسرح الذي توزعت أعماله فيه على المسرح الاجتماعي، والمسرح الذهبي، المرتكز إلى الفكر الفلسفي. ونظراً إلى تنوع مسرح الحكيم، وعمق طروحاته الفكرية، تم في هذا الكتاب دراسة الأسطورة الشعبية في مسرحه، وذلك من خلال ست مسرحيات مستوحاة من أساطير متنوعة، ومن حكايات من التراث الديني أو الشعبي، في محاولة لتسليط الضوء على ما ورد فيها من أجل استنباط خصائصها وميزاتها العامة.
وقد قسم هذا البحث إلى ثلاثة فصول: أضاء أولها على سيرة المؤلف الذاتية وأهم آثارها الأدبية، وتناول الثاني ثلاثة نماذج مسرحية مستقاة من جذور دينية وأهم آثاره الأدبية، وتناول الثاني ثلاثة نماذج مسرحية، مستقاة من جذور دينية أو شعبية شرقية، فيما جاء الفصل الثالث عرضاً لثلاث مسرحيات مستقاة من أساطير يونانية أو فرعونية واعتمد في هذا العرض على المنهج المعياري التحليلي، من أجل إلقاء الضوء على القالب المسرحي لدى "توفيق الحكيم" الذي اعتمد المزج والتوفيق بين عدة ثقافات، واستقى مؤثرات التراث العالمي والمحلي، من أجل خلق فني، جديد وفريد.
