هذا الكتاب هو بالأصل رسالة أعدت لنيل شهادة دبلوم الدراسات العلية في اللغة العربية وآدابها، وقد اختارت المؤلفة "سوزان عقاري" موضوع السخرية في مسرح "انطوان غندور" بعد أن لفت إنتباهها الشكل التعبيري المميز، لدى كاتب مسرحي معاصر، تثير أعماله إنتباه المثقفين، والناس البسطاء، على حد سواء.
وتعود أهميّة هذا البحث إلى إرتباطه بفن أدبي، لازم الحضارة الإنسانية منذ نشوئها، وأخذ دوره يتنامى، في عصرنا الحاضر، نظراً إلى إستيعابه مجمل الطاقات الفكرية والإبداعية، وهو فن المسرح، الملتحم بالحياة ومعاناتها، يستمدّ منها مادته، ويطرح نفسه، في أيامنا، بديلاً حاضراً، من أشكال أدبية أخرى.
ولقد اعتمد المؤلف في هذا البحث، على المنهج المعياري التحليلي، لدراسة السخرية وملامحها وأنواعها، كما لجأت إلى المنهج النفسي من أجل لقاء الضوء على مناخ تشكّل نتاج الكاتب، وقد قسمت هذا البحث إلى ثلاثة أبواب في ثمانية فصول: الباب الأول: درس فن السخرية في فصلين: الفصل الأول تناول أنواعها ووظائفها، فيما تناول الفصل الثاني ملامحَها في الأثار الغربية والعربية.
بالنسبة إلى الباب الثاني، لقد أفردته للمسرحي اللبناني الساخر "انطوان غندور"، وجاء هذا الباب في ثلاثة فصول: عرضت في الأول منها أجواء المسرح اللبناني في الستينات من هذا القرن، والمناخ الثقافي الذي عاشه الكاتب وأثّر في أعماله، بينما سلّطت في الفصل الثاني أضواءً على شخصية المؤلف، بهدف تحليل دوافع السخرية لديه في الفصل الثالث من الباب الثاني، قبل أن انتقل إلى الباب الثالث وأفنّد في فصوله الثلاثة ملامح السخرية وأنواعها والأثر الذي تركه المؤلف في المسرح والمجتمع اللبناني.
وأخيراً، جاءت الخاتمة البحث، عبارة عن خلاصة شاملة للموضوع، مع التركيز على دور الكاتب وأسلوبه.
