عبد اللطيف فتحي هو بحق أحد رواد المسرح الشعبي في سورية، وهو رائد "تشويمه" بعد أن كانت اللهجة المصرية مسيطرة عليه، أخرج المسرح الشعبي من حالة الإسفاف التي قوامها التهريج والضحك المجاني، ليصبح على يديه مسرحاً إجتماعياً هادفاً، وإن ظلت الكوميديا إطاره العام، فقدم مسرحيات تتناول معاناة الناس، انتقد الإستغلال الذي يتعرض له الفقراء، وانتقد الواسطات والمحسوبيات وغيرها من المثالب الإجتماعية.
ولعل مسرحية (اصبر أفندي) التي كتبها حكمت محسن، وقدمها عبد اللطيف فتحي مرتين، الأولى عام 1958، والمرة الثانية عام 1968، تعدُّ النموذج الأوضح للمسرح الإجتماعي.
وإذا كان عبد اللطيف فتحي قد أبدع في المسرح الشعبي، فإنه تألق أيضاً في المسرح الكلاسيكي، فأدى أدواراً رائعة بالغة الفصيحة، وصل فيها إلى قمة عالية، ولعل أدواره في مسرحيات (الملك لير) و(ترويض الشرسة) و(البخيل) خير دليل على ذلك.
عبد اللطف فتحي سيبقى في ذاكرة المسرح في سورية مدرسة، ينهل منه المسرحيون الشباب.
