أصبح الأدب الشعبي منذ النصف الثاني للقرن التاسع عشر مثار إهتمام الباحثين والدارسين، مع غيره من مكونات الموروث الشعبي الأخرى المادية والثقافية، وذلك لما يتمتع به من الخصوصية التي تجعل منه مكوناً أساساً من مكونات المجتمع إن لم يكن أشد هذه المكونات خصوصية وأصالة، ومن ثم فإنه يعدّ السلاح الأهم والأكثر فاعلية في المحافظة على الهوية، وتجنب الإستلاب والذوبان في ثقافات أخرى، وإن كان لا يغفل عن ما بين شعوب الإنسانية من وشائج وروابط وصلات من شأنها أن تسمح بنشوء علاقات إنسانية قائمة على الإحترام المتبادل، وعلى تبادل النافع والمفيد من عناصر الثقافة في ظل علاقات تحترم ما لدى الآخرين وتحافظ وتطور ما لديها من مكونات ثقافية.
ونحن في الوطن العربي بصفة عامة وفي ليبيا بصفة خاصة مع غيرنا من الشعوب النامية أشدّ ما نكون إحتياجاً للمحافظة على تراثنا الشعبي والتمسك به ودراسته وتطويره.
