البحث عن الحقيقة قديم قدم الفكر الفلسفي ذاته، حتى أن بعض الفلاسفة قد ربطوا بين طبيعة الحقيقة بوصفها بحثًا عن الوجود، وبين الحقيقة بوصفها موضوعًا للتفلسف. والكتاب الذي بين يدي القارئ، يتناول مفهوم "الحقيقة" من منظور ميتافيزيقي عند واحد من أبرز الفلاسفة المثاليين الانجليز في القرن التاسع عشر وهو "فرنسيس هربرت برادلي"، ذلك لأن الحقيقة التي كان يسعى إلى بلوغها هي الحقيقة الكلية، أو الحقيقة النهائية التي هي حقيقة كاملة متقدمة بذاتها لا تفتقر إلى ما يوضحها، وهي باختصار "حقيقة المطلق". والمطلق عند "برادلي" هو الغاية التي تسعى إليها كل الأشياء، وهو المعيار الأسمى لكل قيمة، وهو الوجود الكامل القائم بذاته، وهو أيضًا الواقع الكلي الذي يشمل كل واقع جزئي يقع بداخله.
من هذا كله يمكننا القول: إن الحقيقة عند "برادلي" هي الغاية من تأملاته الميتافزيقية. فهو يبحث عن الأمان والنظام، ويريد أن يتغلب على كل ما هو مختلط ومتناقض، بهدف الوصول إلى نظرة متسقة إلى العالم، بحيث يجد الذهن فيها طمأنينته الخاصة.
