تجذب الدراسات المقارنة العديدة من الباحثين، ولا سيما تلك بالدراسات الأدبية التقليدية. غير أن هذه الدراسات لها وجه آخر جذاب، إذ تنطوي على تعقيدات وأسئلة لا تفضي بالضرورة إلى إجابات مقنعة. ومن الأسئلة البارزة على المستوى النظري، ذلك السؤال الرئيسي وهو سؤال المقارنة نفسه: عما يبحث المقارنون؟ أو ما الذي ينبغي أن يبحثوا عنه؟ هل أوجه الشبه بين الآداب والثقافات أم وجه التميز والاختلاف؟ والبحث الذي نقدمه الآن، والذي يدور موضوعه عن (العدل الإلهي) يتناول مثل هذه الدراسة المقارنة بين فكر جماعة من أهم الفرق الكلامية الإسلامية وهي (المعتزلة)، لعبت دورًا أساسيًا على المستوى الديني والسياسي، واحتلت مكانة بارزة في تاريخ علم الكلام.
وفكر الفليسوف الألماني (ليبنتز) الذي مثل الآمال المتناقضة لعالم بأكمله، فقد جمع في فلسفته بين الأفكار والمذاهب المتعارضة، فنجده ملمًا بالتراث القديم والوسط وتراث عصر النهضة والقرت السابع عشر، لذلك كان فليسوفًا وعالمًا وسياسيًا، ولكنه كان- قبل كل شيء- لاهوتيًا وجه كل اهتمامه إلى دراسة الوجود وإلى إبراز مفهوم العناية الإلهية في العالم. ويتناول البحث عدة قضايا تتمثل في: (العقل والإيمان) (الخير والشر أو الحسن والقبح)، (الحرية أو الغرادة الإنسانية)، (مبدأ الأفضل أو الصلاح والأصلح).
