إن الموت ينطوي على كثير من المفارقات والتناقضات، وهو أيضا موضوع كريه مزعج لا يشجع على التفكير فيه أو الحديث عنه. والظاهر أن الناس قد فطنوا إلى ذلك، من قديم الزمان، فنراهم قد دأبوا على نسيان الموت او تناسيه بشتى الحين والأساليب، ولذلك يرى بعض المفكرين أن الحياة ما هي إلا الموت نفسه، لأن الإنسان يشرع في الموت بمجرد أن يولد، وهذه الفترة المحدودة التي يحياها هي المدة التي تستغرقها عملية وفاته. فالإنسان لا يحيا إلا وهو يموت، وهو إذ يمتع العين والقلب والفكر ويحيا الحياة بكل صورها، ولا يفعل كل ذلك إلا وهو ينسج بيده كل خيوط فنائه وموته. وذلك لأن كل لحظة يمر بها هي لحظة نحو الفناء. والإنسان يعرف أنه لا محالة (ميت)، لكنه لا يحاول أبدا ان يواجه هذه الحقيقة. ومن هنا تأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب الذي نعالج من خلاله ظاهرة الموت بكل أبعادها الميتافيزيقية والوجودية والنفسية.
