الدين ظاهرة صاحبت الإنسان منذ نشأته على ظهر الأرض، في جميع العصور وفي شتى أنحاء المعمورة. ومنذ فجر التاريخ تميز الإنسان بالتدين، وإذا كان "أرسطو" قد عرف الإنسان بأنه "كائن ناطق" أي "مفكر"، فقد عرفه غيره من الفلاسفة بأنه "كائن متدين". فذهب "هيجل" مثلًا إلى أن الإنسان وحده الذي يمكن أن يكون له دين، وأن الحيوانات تفتقر إلى الدين بقدر افتقارها إلى القانون والأخلاق؛ وذلك لأن التدين عنصر أساسي في تكوين الإنسان، والشعور الديني يكمن في أعماق كل قلب بشري؛ بل هو يدخل في صميم ماهيته الجوهرية... إن جوهر الدين يتمثل في "الخبرة الدينية" التي تستند إلى مواقف في حياة الإنسان يمكن أن نسميها بـ" المواقف الحدية"، وهي التي تعبر عن حدود لقدرته، وهي- أيضًا- تحدد ماهيته؛ فضلًا عن أنها تجعله يعي طبيعته الحقيقية. وكلما تقبل المرء هذه الحدود- بوصفها جزءًا من وجوده الجوهري- تقدم بخطى أسرع نحو الدين، ونحو الفهم الصحيح للحقيقة التي تقول: "أننا نعتمد على قوى موضوعية يتحدد عن طريقها وجودنا كله"، وهذه الحقيقة هي التي يهتم بها الدين.
