من عادة إفريقيا أن تنتج دائماً أشياء جديدة وصادمة، وما زالت مصر التي حظيت بجزء كبير من هذه التحية المُفعمة بالإعجاب والدهشة التي وجهها ابن غارغانتوا إلى أرض إفريقيا الكبرى أهلاً لهذا التكريم؛ فمناظرها وتقاليدها وعاداتها ما زالت جديدة في نظر الأجانب الذين يحطون الرحال بها، ويصدق عليها نعت (الغريبة)؛ فهي مصدر ذهول جارف، هذا على الأقل هو الإنطباع الأول الذي يتولد لدى الناظر.
لقد أطنب الرحالة في وصف رحلاتهم إلى هذا البلد، كما كُثرت النقوش الدالة عليه، وامتلات واجهات المحلات بصوره؛ مما لا يترك مجالاً لأيّ كان أن يحسب نفسه وهو يحلّ بأرضها مثلَ (روبنسون كروزو) وهو يفتضُ أرضاً بكراً.
لم يترك المؤلف جانباً من جوانب الحياة في مصر إلا ذكره، واسترسل في كثير من الأحيان في وصفه فضلاً عن إنطباعه تجاهه؛ كوصفه للنساء الملثمات، وقوافل الجمال الطويلة التي تمضي بخطوها البطيء المنتظم في قناة موحِلة، والعربُ بوجههم الهادئ القسمات الذين يفْركون حبّات المسبحة مستندين إلى أحد الجدران، والأهرامات التي تثير الدهشة، وسحرة الثعابين، وخرافات النيل، وحفل زفاف ملكي، وغير ذلك الكثير.
