لطالما أثار موضوع الإنطباعات الأولى الإهتمام منذ القدم وما يزال محل الإهتمام ذاته في عالمنا المعاصر، فقد ظل الناس ولقرون يعيشون في المجتمعات التي يولدون فيها ويكوّنون العلاقات ويتواصلون ويقيمون علاقات عمل مع أناس يعرفون كل شيء عن حياتهم، غير أننا نعيش الآن في قرن ينتقل فيه الناس للعيش في مساكن ومدن جديدة ويغيرون أعمالهم ويكوّنون صداقات وعلاقات جديدة بوتيرة أسرع من ذي قبل، لذا فإن اللقاءات الأولى كثيراً ما تتكرر بحيث يصعب إحصاؤها، فقد نتفاعل مع شخص جديد في كل يوم مثل والد أحد الأولاد في مدرستنا الخاصة أو مع زميل أو زبون جديد في العمل أو مع موظف المتجر أو مع أحد الأشخاص في النادي الرياضي أو في صف المقهى.
وفي هذه اللقاءات نتحدث عن الطقس وعن مجريات حياتنا اليومية أو نكوِّن فهماً مبدئياً عن الآخرين، وبالإستناد إلى هذه اللقاءات القصيرة جداً سيكوِّن هؤلاء الغرباء رأيهم عنا، ولربما سيقررون فيما إذا كانوا سيحبوننا أم لا، وإن كانوا يعتبروننا صادقين أو ممتعين أو مسلين، وفيما إذا كانوا سينجذبون للحديث معنا مرة أخرى أو سيستأجروننا للعمل لديهم أو يتواصلون معنا أو يلتقون بنا من جديد.
ألا تود أن تعرف عما يظنه الناس بك؟ إن هذا الكتاب سوف يساعدك في الإجابة على الأسئلة مثل: كيف يراني الآخرون؟ وما الذي يرونه وراء مظهري الخارجي؟ وكيف يمكنني أن أترك إنطباعاً أفضل؟ ونحن بدورنا نقدم المعلومات التي تحتاجها للإجابة على هذه التساؤلات عبر تحديد العلاقة بين ما تقوله وما سيراه الآخرون على الأرجح، فلقد وجدنا بأن هذه العلاقات بسيطة جداً إلا أنها ليست مدركة حدسياً أبداً حتى من قبل الأذكياء والمثقفين، ورغم أن أهمية هذه المعرفة للنجاح في الحياة إلا أنه لا يتم تعليمها في المدرسة ونادراً ما يخبرك أي كان عن هذه المعلومات بأمانة وموضوعية.
