لا أحسب أن في العربية حتى الآن كتاباً عن "الانطباعية" بهذا العمق، وهذه السعة، رغم رقعته المحدودة يخيل إلي أن مؤلفه، الناقد الفرنسي جان ليماري، مدير متحف غرينوبل، تأمل طويلاً في اللوحات التي سلسل ذكرها ودراستها منذ بدايات الانطباعية، وعايشها بحب خاص، مع إحاطة بارعة بالأحداث والمفارقات التي صاحبت رسمها وتفاصيل حياة صانعيها، فاستطاع أن يوجز ذلك كله على نحو يتابع مسارها وتناميها وتشعبها حتى تشظيها إلى حركات الفن الحديثة، بدقة ووضوح، مع نفاذ فكري بشأن أهمية الحركة الانطباعية كمنعطف تاريخي كبير في تجربة الإنسان الإبداعية.
والمؤلف، في جمعه بين الجوانب الشخصية من حياة هؤلاء الفنانين الكبار، والجوانب التقنية لما حاولوا أن يحققوه، أبرز النواحي الإنسانية التي هي جزء من كل مسعى كبير يغير نظرة المرء إلى الكون، أو يغنيها ويعمقها. وهي نواح يتميز فيها الصراع الذاتي بين الفنان ونفسه، بين حاجته الإبداعية وحاجته المادية، وبينه كصاحب رؤية جديدة وبين المجتمع الذي من شأنه أن يقاوم هذه الرؤية -وكل ما يحتمه ذلك من إرادة وإيمان بالنفس إزاء الرفض والحرمان والجوع. وأقول الرفض والحرمان والجوع، لأن العديد من هؤلاء الذين غيروا موقف الإنسان من الطبيعة وإدراكها ووسعوا طاقته على الاستجابة والتعبير، رفضوا فعلاً، وحرموا، وجاعوا، ولم يكن لهم ما يبقيهم على عطائهم المتفرد إلا رؤيتهم التي يتشبثون بها وما يملكون من قماشة وفرشاة- ولو أنهم كانوا أحياناً لا يملكون حتى ما يشترون به أصباغهم.
