لذلك، يحاول هذا الكتاب أن يستلهم منها صورة جليَّة لتلك الأفكار، فالملاحم والأساطير الرافديَّة التي أبدعت بوصفها نتاجاً أدبيّاً راقياً نستطيع اليوم أن نعدَّها سجلاً للمعتقدات والطقوس الدينيَّة من طريق سردها لروايات عن قصَّة الخلق، وتدمير العالم بالطوفان، والبحث عن الخلود، وإكتساف عالم السماوات بالعروج إليها.
وتتميَّز الملاحم والأساطير الرافديَّة القديمة بأنَّها تتقدَّم بأزمان طويلة على كلّ تراث العالم المماثل، والذي هو - بما فيه العهد القديم - كان قد وصلنا عبر تواتر الروايات الشفهيَّة أو تتالي النسخ، مِمَّا عرَّضه للتبديل والتحوير، بينما نحن الآن نقرأ الملاحم الرافديَّة كما دُوِّنت في مطلع الألف الثاني ق. م.
