إن كتاباً عن الموقف الديني في الوقت الراهن يجب أن يتناول العالم المعاصر بأكمله، وذلك لأنه لا يوجد شئ هو بشكل ما إلا وهو تعبير عن الموقف الديني، ولكن يستحيل على أي إنسان أن يكتب عن كل الأشياء المعاصرة؛ إننا لن نستطيع أن ندلي بعبارات جادة تستحق البحث عن الأشياء إلا طالما أن لنا علاقة حميمة معها، وهذا لا يعني أن الحدود المفروضة علينا هي تلك الحدود التي لدى الأخصائي أن تأمل الأشياء من وجهة نظر الأبدية لا يعني أن ننظر فيها بعيون الأخصائي، حتى لو كان هو الأخصائي اللاهوتي إن الأمر يعني بالأحرى أنه يجب دراستها من أجل اكتشاف ماذا تعني بالنسبة لعلاقة عصرنا بالأبدية، وعلى أي حال من المستحيل أن نفعل هذا ما لم نتوحد بها بشكل حيوي، ومن ثم فإن محدودية الكل تعني بشكل جاد عبارات عنها، وهذه المحدوديات لا تجلب للقارئ الأمر نفسه بالنسبة للكاتب؛ إن حدود القارئ بالنسبة للعلاقة الحية مع الأشياء إنما تكمن في موضوع أخر والصعوبة لا مهرب منها، ولكن ستكون مفيدة إذا كانت نتيجتها هي أن القارئ من جانبه، وقد انبعث من جراء تناقضاته وموافقاته، إنما بدع علاقاته الخاصة بالحياة والواقع تطلق معناها.
