دأبت الجماعات المسيحيّة في القرون الأُولى على إستعمال الرموز للتعبير عن إيمانها خفيةً، بسبب الإضطهاد الذي تعرّضت له؛ وتُبيِّن أبحاث التنقيبات الأثريّة أنّ جميع هذه الرموز، كالحَمام وغصن الزيتون والحَمَل، أُخذَت من العهدين القديم والجديد.
لكنّ المسيحيّين استعملوا أيضاً السمكة، التي لا نجد لها إشارةً رمزيّة واضحة في أيّ نصّ من نصوص الكتاب المقدّس، ومع ذلك، انتشر رسمها إنتشاراً واسعاً بين مؤمني حوض البحر الأبيض المتوسّط طوال القرون الأربعة الأُولى، فإلامَ ترمز السمكة؟ وما سرّ إختيارها دون كثير من الحيوانات التي ورد ذكرها عَرَضاً في الأسفار المقدّسة، كالعقرب والسلحفاة والأرنب...؟ هذا ما يحاول هذا الكتاب الإجابة عليه.
