جماعة الديوان هي جماعة رائدة للتحديد، وجهدها النقدي والشعري لا يجاوزه ناقد منصف، فقد اكتسب أعلامها الثلاثة (شكري ، العقاد ، المازني) ذكراً طار بتجديدهم في الآفاق العربية، ولم يكن تأثيرها في مصر فحسب، بل تجاوز ذلك إلى المساحة العربية، فقامت عليها دراسات وبحوث كشفت قيمتها وأكدت ريادتها، ولا غرابة بعدئذٍ أن تؤثر في الحجاز؛ فالحجاز بيئة عربية مجاورة لمصر وتربطهما وشائج وصلات إجتماعية ودينية وثقافية.
ومن تلك العلاقة انبثقت فكرة هذا الكتاب عند المؤلف الدكتور عبد الرحمن المحسني واختار جماعة الديوان لبيان اثرها في أدباء الحجاز للفترة (1350-1400ه) وفيها حاول المؤلف تقديم صورة مصر في بيئة الحجاز من وجهة ثقافية، وتوجه أدباء الحجاز إلى مصر في تلك الفترة (القرن الرابع عشر الهجري) ثم الإحاطة بمؤلفات جماعة الديوان إحاطة وافية من خلال التعريف بهم وبما كتبه أدباء الحجاز عنهم بادئاً بالعقاد ثم المازني وانتهاءً بشكري، وقد أوسع مكاناً في دراسته لأحمد شوقي "إمارة شوقي للشعر بين جماعة الديوان وأدباء الحجاز" ، و "ثورة التجديد الديوانيين وأدباء الحجاز" ، ومشيراً إلى دراسات نقدية في هذا الباب مع البحث والتحليل والنقد.
وبالإستناد إلى ما تقدم توزعت الدراسة على ثلاثة أبواب بعناوين رئيسية هي: الباب الأول: أعلام الديوان ومؤلفاتهم في الباصرة الحجازية، الباب الثاني: القضية النقدية لجماعة الديوان في الباصرة الحجازية، والباب الثالث: التطبيق للنظرية النقدية لجماعة الديوان في الباصرة الحجازية.
