خنان الإناث: هو إستئصال جزئي أو كلي لأعضاء التأنيث الرئيسة الظاهرة للأنثى، والختان الشرعي: هو إستئصال للقلفة مع ترك البظر سالماً.
أما الختان غير الشرعي (الفرعوني): فهو إقتطاع البظر وهو الجزء الأكثر حساسية من بين الأعضاء التناسلية للأنثى، وهو تشويه وتغيير لخلق الله سبحانه وتعالى، وهو أخطر أنواع ختان الإناث، وفي جميعها يتم الإعتداء على البظر.
أصبح ختان الإناث ظاهرة عالمية واسعة الإنتشار، تركز في القارة الأفريقية في حوالي ثلاثين بلداً - في مقدمتها مصر ونيجريا وأثيوبيا - وانتقل إلى بعض دول آسيا وأوروبا وأمريكا عن طريق الجماعات المهاجرة إلى تلك الدول.
اختلفت الآراء في ختان الإناث - في مصر كما في الدول الأخرى - إلى حد التناقض، وهذا الإختلاف والتناقض وصل إلى شيوخ الأزهر والأطباء (وبضمنهم وزراء الصحة) والباحثين وعامة الناس، وحتى القضاء تأرجح في مواقفه من ختان الإناث.
أما في أصل - ومنبع - ختان الإناث - وبخاصة الختان الفرعوني - ففيه أكثر من رأي: فهناك من يرجعه إلى عصر الفراعنة في مصر، وهناك من يرجعه إلى (فرعون).
ولأهمية مصر دولياً وإقليمياً فقد تنوعت البيانات، من بحوث ودراسات ومؤتمرات، ولأن أعداد المختونات وصل إلى ما يقارب من (ثمانية وعشرين مليوناً)، وهذا ما حدا بالدول والجهات الأجنبية إلى التدخل، وعلى وفق الآتي:
-أعربت الأمم المتحدة عن إستيائها من الحكم بإعادة ترخيص ختان الإناث.
-الخارجية الأمريكية تطالب بإعادة الحظر على ختان الإناث.
-الخارجية الأمريكية والأمم المتحدة والبرلمان الأوروبي منزعجون جداً من إلغاء قرار حظر ختان الإناث.
-صحيفة (واشنطن بوست) تدعو رئيس الكونجرس الأمريكي لتخفيض المعونة لمصر إذا استمر ختان الإناث.
-إيطاليا تدفع (ثلاثة عشر) مليون يورو لمنع الختان في مصر.
