يناقش هذا الكتاب عملية ختان الإناث بوصفها عادة إجتماعية ترتبط بالسياسة الشرعية وما يترتب عليها من مصلحة أو ضرر، ويؤكد أن هذه العادة مخالفة لروح الإسلام ونظرته للمرأة وحقوقها لكونها تؤدي إلى الضرر وإلى فوات أمر مطلوب شرعاً ومحل نقاش، كما يكشف بعدها الإجتماعي والثقافي عن كونها عادة متأصلة في النفوس لها جذورها النفسية وإحاطتها بهالة من الشائعات والكلام غير المنطقي أو العلمي والمصالح، وذلك بعرض مادة تاريخية وتراثية، وتقديم شهادات من الواقع، ومناقشة الادعاءات المثارة حول فائدة هذه العادة والأضرار التي تنتج عنها، ثم التكوين التشريعي للأعضاء التناسلية، وآخيراً ملاحق تتضمن مناقشة بين الدكتور محمد سليم العوا والدكتور يحيى إسماعيل وتخريج بعض أحاديث ختان الإناث.
