على مستوى الشخصيات فقد منحت مسرحية "بستان الكرز" تصويراً حادّاً جداً لأشخاص، رغم كونهم ذوي شخصيات جذابة، إلا أنهم عرضة للكرب والبكاء مع تفاهاتهم الأنانية.
وعلى المستوى الإجتماعي فقد مثّلت المسرحية واقع الثقافة في تحوّلها العنيف: بين السادة والخدم على حدّ سواء، وبين المجموعات من أعمار مختلفة.
الأشخاص التقليديون المحبوبون ذوو الأفق الغامض والإرادة الضعيفة يُفتَرسون بواسطة أشخاص فاعلين خشنين ودون رحمة من حديثي النعمة، بالنسبة لتشيكوف على وجه الخصوص، فإن كلمات مثل الإستقامة والشفاء، تُلفظ بواسطة الضعيف والمرفوض، "التلميذ الأبدي" تروفيموف.
