ما نطرحه في هذا الكتاب وندعو إليه هو الإسلام الحقيقي الذي يتبنى بقوة قيم الحرية والعدالة والكرامة والفضيلة في إطار نظام يعكس إرادة الناس. إننا لا دعو هنا إلى إسلام الكهنة والسلاطين الذين أغرقوا المسلمين لقرون طويلة في مستنقعات الجهل والقهر والفساد والظلم، ولا إلى إسلام الاتجاهات التي صنعوها والتي مزقت وحدة المسلمين ونشرت الخرافة وبررت للفساد وتواطأت مع الحكام... ولكننا ندعو إلى إسلام عقلاني؛ منفهتح وعادل يعمل منأجل الإنسان مهما كان انتماؤه.
إن الإسلام في جوهره دعوة إلى الحرية والعدالة وكل القيم الإنسانية الرفيعة، وهو يقدم ما يكفي من التشريعات الأساسية من أجل حماية هذ القيم. وعلى أساسه يمكن للإنسانية كلها أن تبلغ غايتها القصوى في الإبداع والبناء والإنجاز، بل إن الإسلام يملك ما لا تملكه هذه الحداثة المؤسسة على رؤية مادية للحيا، فهو لا يهتم فحسب حاجات الإنسان المادية، بل إنه فوق ذلك يعطي للجوانب الروحية والمعنوية أهميتها التي تستحقها.
