تفصل الطبعة التي بين يدي القارئ عن فترة تأليف الكتاب ثماني عشرة سنة، وهي مدة قصيرة نسبياً، ولكنها شهدت -بحكم تسارع حركة التاريخ المعاصر- تحوّلات هامة ما من شك في أنها أثّرت وما زالت تؤثّر في العلاقة بين الإسلام والحداثة... وقد تبدو هذه التحولات للمؤرخ الذي يدرسها على المدى الطويل غير جديدة، أي لا تختلف نوعياً عن العناصر التي كانت موجودة من قبل، إلا أنّ الاختلاف الكمّي لا يقل أهمية عن الاختلاف الكيفي، وبينهما لا محالة علاقة جدلية من شأنها أن تؤدي إلى نتائج جديدة كل الجدة. ولا بد من لفت النظر إلى ظاهرة تفاقمت في السنوات الأخيرة وأضحت تهدد التمثّل السليم للحداثة، باعتبارها نمطاً حضارياً نشأ في الغرب قبل أن يصبح كونياً ويفرض نفسه على سائر المعمورة. ونقصد بهذه الظاهرة الإفرازات السلبية الخطيرة للحداثة كما تعيشها المجتمعات المنتجة لها والمنخرطة فيها. [...] ولا نريد أن يُفهم عنّا التقليل من شأنها، ولكننا نريد الإلحاح على أن الحضارة الحديثة ليست في كل تجلياتها، الإيجابية والسلبية على السواء، قَدَراً محتوماً. إنها نتاج بشر مثلنا، لا أذكى منا ولا أفضل بكل المقاييس.
