Quelle est la nature du pouvoir en une société théocratique? Peut-on imaginer un État arabo-islamique? Ces réflexions nécessitent une autre lecture du Coran et provoqueront d’importants débats.
De meme, la liberté n’est pas un concept donné une fois pour toutes par la religion islamique mais une situation qui change au rythme des modifications économiques et socials. Là aussi l’influence occidentale est importante et conflictuelle: à la fois facteur de crise d’une pensée religieuse trop figée, et révélatrice de la modernité.
C’est avec l’étude de l’œuvre de Jamal al- Dine al- Afghani et de tout le courant salafiste du xix siècle, qui s’inspire de la philosophie des Lumières, qu’on perçoit mieux encore la richesse de la méthode historico- critique adoptee par l’auteur.
"Abdallah Laroui" est professeur d’histoire à la Faculté Mohamed V de Rabat et member de l’Académie du royaume du Maroc. Il est l’auteur de nombreux ouvrages don’t Histoire du Maghreb (1975) et L’idéologie arabe contemporaine (1967 et 1977) aux éditions François Maspero.
