جاء الكتاب في بابين؛ وُسِمَ الأول بـ "المسار النظري" وفيه أربعة فصول، الأول منها يتحدث عن نشأة اللغة، وتاريخ البحوث اللغوية، وقضايا اللغة من حيث اشتقاقها وتعريفاتها وخصائصها ووظائفها. والثاني يتحدث عن مصطلحين هما: فقه اللغة وعلم اللغة واللسانيات وفوائدها وفروعها، وقوانينها. والثالث يتحدث عن أعلام الدرس اللغوي الحديث ومناهجهم مع تركيز على النظرية التوليدية التحويلية. والرابع يتحدث عن جهود العرب في الدراسات اللغوية. وأما الباب الثاني فهو باب تطبيقي وُسِمَ بـ أنماط أسلوبية بين النظرية والتطبيق.
