يتناول الكتاب ثلاثة موضوعات أساسية في الدراسات اللسانية الحديثة، هي: اللسانيات وفروعها المختلفة، واللغة: تعريفها، وخصائصها، ووظائفها، والمدارس اللسانية وأصولها الفلسفية. ولعله لا يخفي على القارئ أن هذا هو ما يمكن أن يقدم للقارئ المبتدئ في استكشاف معالم هذا الحقل، إذ من المنطقي أن يبدأ بالتعرف على هذا العلم وفروعه، ثم ينتقل إلى دراسة مفهوم اللغة التي هي موضوع هذا العلم، ثم ينطلق للتوسع في الإطلاع على مدارس العلم، والأصول الأنطولوجية، والإبستمولوجية التي وجهت تلك المدارس، ويتخلل كل هذا وذاك تعريف للمفاهيم، وتقويم للأفكار التي لا بد من معرفتها لطالب اللسانيات، كما اشتمل الكتاب أيضاً على بعض الأسئلة التي تختبر فهم القارئ، ومدى استيعابه لما يقرأ.
وقد صمم ليكون منهجاً ملائماً لطلاب اللسانيات في الدراسات الجامعية، وما بعدها، ويرمي إلى تقديم المفاهيم اللسانية الأساسية التي يحتاج غليها المبتدئون في دراسة اللسانيات، وذوو الثقافة العامة، والمهتمون بهذا الحقل.
