للغة والمجتمع والحضارة ظواهر متداخلة متكاملة، لقد أثار كثير من المفكرين على مضي القرون قضية أولية اللغة أم المجتمع أو الحضارة، وأثاروا ايضاً قضية اللغة والفكر أيهما سبق الآخر، ولكن البحث الحديث يحاول أن يبتعد عن هذه الدائرة المفرغة من التساؤلات حول مراحل يصعب الوصول إليها ليثبت تلازم اللغة مع فكر الإنسان وضرورة اللغة لقيام المجتمع الإنساني وضرورة وجود مجتمع إنساني يتعاون في إقامة الحضارة.
إن الإنسان مارس اللغة منذ آلاف السنين، هي عمر الإنسان على الأرض ثم فكر الإنسان في أن يدون اللغة ويخلدها بذلك للأجيال التالية، كان هذا في مصر والعراق منذ خمسة آلاف سنة فقط، وظلت أكثر الشعوب على مدى العصور لا تكتب، فاللغة قديمة قدم المجتمع الإنساني، وكتابتها ظاهرة حديثة نسبياً، وهناك شعوب كثيرة لم تدون لغتها إلا في السنوات الأخيرة، وكثير من أبناء هذه الشعوب أميون وبعضهم لا يتصور أن تلك العبارات التي ينطق بها يمكن أن تدون، فاللغة توحد، سواء أكتبت أم لم تكتب فالإنسان يحتاج اللغة في حياته اليومية، ولكن تدوين اللغة لا يأتي عادة إلا في مرحلة من الرقي الحضاري.
