ليس هدفى من وراء هذا الكتاب أن أكتب مقدمة ضافية لعلم اللغة لأننا لسنا فى حاجة إلى مراجعة منهجية واسعة للموضوع لكى نجيب عن سؤال بسيط مثل: ماعلم اللغة؟ لأن من عادة المشتغلين فى حقل الدراسات اللغوية أن يقدموا موجزاً سريعاً عن موضوعهم للناس الذين يقابلونهم، لكن المطلوب فى الحقيقة شىء أكثر من هذا. ولذلك فقد افترضت الجهل التام بهذا الموضوع لدى القارىء وحاولت ألا أفترض وجود أى شىء مسلم به، ومن ثم سيتبرم بهذا المنطلق هؤلاء الذين لديهم بعض المعرفة فعلاً عن علم اللغة، غير أن هذا الكتاب لم يوضع من أجلهم.
ويقع هذا الكتاب فى ثلاثة فصول، يتناول الفصل الأول منها بعض المفاهيم الخاطئة حول اللغة ويحاول أن يصل ما بين الدراسة الحديثة للغة بعض الدراسات القديمة. أما الفصل الثانى فيناقش ما تنطوى عليه عبارة -علم اللغة-، مع فحص بعض مظاهر التعقيد فى بنية اللغة ووظيفتها. ثم يأتى الفصل الثالث ليبحث فى الدور الذى يقوم به -علم اللغة- فى المجتمع ونوع العمل الذى يتوقع أن يقوم به من حصل على تأهيل فى هذا الموضوع. ويشرح الكتاب وجهات نظرى الخاصة فيما يدور حول موضوع علم اللغة، ومع ذلك فقد حاولت أن أحصر انتباهى فى أشياء قد يعتقد أنها غير أصيلة وتقليدية.
