"تعد الديانة البودية من أهم الديانات في العالم، كما أنها تحتوي أعمق الفلسفات الدينية، فهي من نتاج مطبخ الأديان الشهير في الهند، الذي نشر في العالم كله عقائد الكارما والنيرفانا والتقمص والزهد. كانت التعاليم التي تركها بودا شفوية، وبعد وفاته جمعها أتباعه ثم دونوها وشرحوها. وتنفرد الكتابات البودية المقدسة بظاهرة نادرة، فالبوديين لا يدعون أنها منزلة أو موحى بها، وإنما هي مجرد كلمات بودا.
وسنورد مع الدراسة المقارنة ثلاث نصوص بودية أساسية لتعطي فكرة متكاملة عن هذه الدعوة:
مختارات من انجيل بودا: الذي تلتقي عنده كل المذاهب البوذية، وتعده الأساس الصحيح، وفيه نجد أوضح الإجابات حول الأسئلة الأزلية للبشر: لماذا يولد إنسان فقير وآخر غنى؟ وإنسان معاق وآخر معافى.
مختارات من شريعة بودا: وهو النص الأشهر والأقدس بين النصوص البودية المقدسة، حيث يشمل جميع المبادئ الأساسية للبودية.
مختارات من مأثورات بودا: وتضم أشهر وأهم أقوال بودا وحِكَمه.
