وبعد تحرر شعوب العالم الغربي المسيحي من القبضة الكنسية، ظهرت عدت دراسات، اهتمت بالمجال الديني المسيحي أو اليهودي بالدراسة النقدية المبنية على الحجة والدليل. والتي توصلت جلها إن لم نقل كلها إلى التشكيك في العقائد الأساسية المكونة للديانة المسيحية، والدعوة إلى ضرورة تنقيح هذه الديانة بحذف ما لحقها من الإضافات، والعمل على تنقيحها وتطويرها حتى تلائم الفطرة الإنسانية السليمة. فنتج عن ذلك ظهور طبعات وترجمات عديدة للكتاب المقدس، يختلف بعضها عن بعض، فكلما تم اكتشاف أقدم مخطوط إلا وتمت إعادة النظر في الكتاب المقدس بالتنقيح والتهذيب. ومع ذلك تعمل الكنائس، عن عمد، على ترك الأخطاء التي توَصَّل الباحثون إليها، وبالأخص فيما يتعلق بالجانب العقدي..."
