نشاته
ولد في مدينة حماة، نشأ في أسرة متديّنة، يتيماً فقيراً، فكان يشتغل في مهنة الخياطة نهاراً، ويدرس على العلماء في المساجد ليلاً.
تعلمه
وحبّب الله إليه طلب العلم فكان لا يقتصر على الكتب المدرسية المقرّرة بل يُقبل بشغف عظيم على كتب العلم يحلّ عويصها، ويتمثّل معارفها،

هذا كتابٌ عُريَ فيه الباطل عن زخرفه فبدا عواره، وظهر شناره، فمقته القلب، وقذرته العين كارهةً له. وعرض فيه الحق عرضاً لم يبال معه برونق لفظٍ أو بحسن عرضٍ وإن كانا متوفرين فيه لثقة صاحبه أن بالحق وحده يستقيم أمر الإنسان، وأن للحق وحده جولة الانتصار، وأن في الحق وحده القوة الرادعة، والروعة الآسرة، التي تجعل القلب يستسلم باطناً وإن رفض صاحبه الخضوع ظاهراً. وهذا الكتاب لم يساير ولم يدار ولم يطل حيث أمكن الاختصار، ولم يختصر حيث ينبغي التطويل، ولم يكتب لزمان غير زماننا وإن كان الحق الذي فيه حق كل زمان، بل هو نبع لِرَيِّنا - نحن أبناء هذا الزمان - فهو ابن زمانه إذ كتب وقلَّ العارفون بالحق البصيرون به، وندر المجاهرون بالحق المصارحون به، وفقد الناصحون للخلق في الله إلا قليلاً، وهذا الكتاب رمزٌ على هذا القليل، جوهرة وحده بجانب خزف كثير، درة وحده بجانب خرز كثير، ما أرى قارئه يندم، وأرجو له إن قبل الحق الذي فيه أن يَسْلَمْ يوم لا يَسْلَمُ إلا من زُحزح عن النار وأُدخل الجنة.
