عملية تدهور البيئة والتي يمكن قياسها بقلّة الإنتاج النباتي للنباتات المرغوبة وزيادة النباتات غير المرغوبة، وزيادة في التعرية التعجيلية والتملح وتغدق الأراضي المروية وما يرافق ذلك من انخفاض الإنتاج الحيواني، والذي يؤدي إلى زيادة في تدهور حالة المعايشة للناس وخاصة الساكنين في المناطق المعرّضة لهذا التدهور الخطير. إن زيادة سكان الأرض زيادة تصاعدية نتيجة لانخفاض مستوى الوفيات بين الأطفال بالدرجة الأولى، وزيادة معدل الأعمار بالدرجة الثانية، وذلك بسبب التطوّر الطبي واكتشاف العديد من العلاجات بالإضافة إلى النجاح في تحديد مسببات الإمراض والأوبئة. وقد بقى سكان الأرض في زيادة خطية بطيئة منذ ألفي سنة، ولكن طبيعة الزيادة تغيرت منذ القرن الثامن عشر والقرن التاسع عشر، واتخذت شكلا تصاعديا مما استوجب القلق على مصير الإنسان لا من ناحية التأثير السلبي على البيئة فحسب بل من إمكانية توفير الغذاء الكافي لهم.
