خصصت مباحث هذا الكتاب دراسة ظاهرة الجفاف المناخي والتصحر والظواهر المصاحبة لهما، وقسمت فصوله إلى سبعة فصول هي: تعريف الجفاف المناخي والظروف الجوية المؤدية إلى حدوثه في الفصل الأول، بينما يدرس الفصل الثاني والفصل الثالث خصائص الأمطار بأقاليم شمال الصحراء وجنوبها بالإضافة إلى الجفاف والمجاعات بأقاليم الساحل وسبل مكافحتها. وخصص الفصل الرابع لحرائق الغابات. أما الفصل الخامس فيدرس مشكلة التصحر في حين يدرس الفصل السادس العواصف الغبارية. وينتقل الفصل السابع إلى معالجة سبل مكافحة التصحر.
وبدلاً من الأسلوب التقليدي الذي يكدس المعلومات التي يجد الطالب صعوبة في فهمها وفي استدراكها أثناء الامتحان، رأى الباحث ضرورة تزويد كل فصل بأعداد ضخمة من أسئلة المراجعة التي تساعد الطالب على التعلم الذاتي والاستذكار، مما يسهل عليه دخول الامتحان وهو مطمئن ولا يتوقع حصول المفاجئات. كما زودت الفصول بالكثير من الصور والأشكال المعبرة عن الأفكار المطروحة وتساعد على سرعة الفهم، كما دلل كل فصل بلائحة للمراجع تقدم لمن يريد المزيد من المعلومات، وتنير الطريق لإجراء المزيد من الدراسات المستقبلية.
