إن تزايد الاهتمام بموضوع انتهاك الصحراء للأرض من قبل المسؤولين الإداريين والباحثين العلميين، وكذلك من قبل القارئ العادي على حدّ سواء، هذا الاهتمام يدعو إلى التركيز على موضوع التصحر، بدفع قوي متجدد يجاري حدّة انتشارهن بهدف اطلاع أهل القرار على الأخطار التي تهدد الأرض العربية خاصة وأن التصحر يبتلع كل عام 11 مليون هكتار من الغابات الاستوائية ويزحف بمعدل ستة ملايين هكتار في السنة مهدداً بخسارة مليون طن من التربة الخصبة في العالم كما توضح من المؤتمر الخامس والعشرين لمنظمة الفاو الذي انعقد في العام 1989.
وبالرغم من المؤتمرات والندوات التي تقام حول هذا الموضوع، فإن ظاهرة التصحر آخذة بالازدياد على المستويين القومي والعالمي، وذلك لأن فعل الإنسان الجائر بالأرض ما زال قائماً بل هو يتمدد ويتوسع، وما الظواهر السلبية الكثيرة التي نسمع بها ونلمسها سوى انعكاس لهذا الفعل الجائر. فكوكبنا يشهد الآن ما اصطلح على تسميته بـ"الحماوة الأرضية (Global Warming)"، كما أن المعلومات عن الركاكة في طبقة الأوزون، وحشاشة التجمعات الجليدية في القطبين، وانسلاخ الغابات والتغيرات المرتقبة في مستوى سطح البحار... الخ. كل هذه المؤشرات السلبية يجب أن تكون حافزاً إلى المزيد من العلم، وإلى تسريع خطوات إدراكنا لما يحيط بنا والوسائل الأمثل لمواجهتها. ضمن هذا السياق، ولهذا الغرض يأتي هذا الكتاب الذي يشرح المؤلف من خلاله ظاهرة التصحر في الوطن العربي مبيناً بأن انتهاك الصحراء للأرض تمثل عائقاً يقف في وجه الإنماء العربي.
