تدهور الأنظمة البيئية بسبب التصحر من الصعب توضيحها لتعقيدها وكونها تتضمن حالة التنوع الإحيائي والتربة والموارد المائية و شكل سطح الأرض وأبعاد الإنتاج البيئات الأرضية والمائية. تأثير التصحر له إبعاد كثيرة كتصحر الأراضي وما يرافق ذلك من تدهور وقلة إنتاجية هذه المناطق وكذلك تصحر البيئات المائية. عملية تدهور البيئة والتي يمكن قياسها بقلة الإنتاج النباتي للنباتات المرغوبة و زباده النباتات الغير مرغوبة وزيادة في التعرية التعجيلية والتملح وتغدق الأراضي المروية وما يرافق ذلك من انخفاض الإنتاج الحيواني وكذلك تدهور البيئات المائية نتيجة للاستثمار الجائر والصيد الجائر و بسبب تعرض المياه للتلوث Pollution رمي مبيدات الآفات , إضافة مفضلات مساحيق الغسيل , فضلات المصانع و الفضلات المنزلية وفضلات الإسطبلات وغيرها من المواد الملوثة والتي تؤدي إلى التلوث الحراري وقلة الأوكسجين المذاب ومن المعروف يعتبر الجسم المائي ملوثا إذا كان تركيز الأوكسجين المذاب اقل من الحد المطلوب لإدامة الحياة المائية والصيد الجائرOver fishing أو الاستثمار الجائر exploitation Over للمسطحات المائية وغيرها من الأسباب التي تؤدي إلى انهيار النظام البيئي للمياه. والذي يؤدي إلى زيادة في تدهور الحالة المعايشة للناس المعتمدين في معيشتهم على هذه الموارد و الساكنين في المناطق المعرضة لهذا التدهور الخطير.
