إن التربة الجيدة والتي تعد وسط مناسب لنمو النبات لابد إن تخزن وتجهز الماء والمواد الغذائية وتكون خالية من التراكيز العالية للعوامل السامة.إن نظام التربة (التربة والماء والنبات)يكون أكثر تعقيدا لان جذور النباتات يجب إن تتنفس باستمرار وان اغلب نباتات الكرة الأرضية لاستطيع نقل الأوكسجين من اجزائها الهوائية إلى جذورها بصورة كافية لسد حاجة تنفس الجذور.وبهذا يجب إن تكون التربة قادرة تبادل الغازات بينها وبين الجو إي وجود مسامات تسمح بحركة الهواء والماء.لان التربة المشبعة بالماء تؤدي إلى اختناق الجذور كما هو الحال في الترب المتغدقة وان الترب الجافة جدا تكون عرضة للتشقق والتفتيت وبالتالي تكون عرضة للتعرية الربحية. تعد التربة ذات خصوبة كيميائية إذا احتوت على كميات كافية وجاهزة من المواد المطلوبة لتغذية النبات.والتي لاتكون عالية الحموضة (منخفضة pH)أو عالية القاعدية (عالية pH)وخالية من المواد السامة.إن ملائمة التربة التامة كوسط لنمو النبات لاتعتمد فقط على وجود كميات من العناصر الكيميائية (الغذائية)وعلى غياب السمية.
