شهدت دول مجلس التعاون لدول الخليج العربية خلال العقد الأول من الألفية الجديدة تطورات سريعة في مختلف المجالات التنموية وانعكست هذه التطورات في تبوأ دول المجلس مراكز متقدمة في سجل التنمية على الصعيد العالمي، حيث تُصنف اليوم ضمن مجموعة الدول التي تتمتع بتنمية بشرية مرتفعة جداً وفقاً لمؤشر التنمية البشرية الصادر عن الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي. كما وتتمتع دول مجلس التعاون الخليجي بوضع اقتصادي ومالي مستقر، حيث استطاعت تحقيق معدلات نمو اقتصادية غير مسبوقة، فضلاً عن تحسين البيئة الاستثمارية من جوانبها المختلفة، الأمر الذي مهد الطريق لأن تكون منطقة جذب للإستثمارات الأجنبية المباشرة في مختلف القطاعات الاقتصادية، حيث ازداد نشاط الشركات الأجنبية العاملة فيها، وأصبحت مركزاً لاستقطاب العمالة بمختلف مستوياتها. في هذا الكتاب يستعرض الدكتور نوزاد عبد الرحمن الهيتي ديناميكية التحول التنموي الاقتصادي والاجتماعي بدول مجلس التعاون الخليجي خلال العقد الأول من الألفية الجديدة، لغرض بيان أهم الإنجازات والتحديات التي تعترض مسار التنمية المستدامة الخليجية، وقد تم للمؤلف تناوله في ثلاثة فصول خصص الفصل الأول منه لدراسة قضايا اقتصادية، تتناول موضوعات مختلفة ترتبط بالاقتصاد المعرفي، والاستثمارات الأجنبية المباشرة، والتكامل الاقتصادي الخليجي، والصناعات المعرفية والصناعات الدوائية. أما الفصل الثاني، فيركز على التنمية الاجتماعية، من خلال التطرق لقضايا تتعلق بالتنمية والتعليم ومشاركة المرأة في النشاط الاقتصادي، الى آخر ذلك من تحديات تتعلق بالبطالة، وأسواق العمل، والتركيبة السكانية. ويأتي الفصل الثالث والأخير ليسلط الضوء على التنمية البيئية، حيث تم فيه تناول موضوعات تتعلق بالتغير المناخي والمياه والتصحر والتلوث والاستدامة البيئية. وبالاستناد الى ما تم تناوله يكون الكتاب قد أعطى صورة عن التطورات التي شهدتها دول مجلس التعاون الخليجي في مختلف مجالات التنمية والتحديات التي واجهت هذه التطورات، والسبل الكفيلة لمواجهة التحديات
