تتشكل التنمية المستدامة اليوم من ثلاثة عناصر؛ هي: العنصر الاقتصادي الذي يركز على تحقيق النمو الاقتصادي، والعنصر الاجتماعي الذي يركز على تحقيق العدالة الاجتماعية في توزيع الدخل وتحقيق الرفاهية الاجتماعية، والعنصر البيئي الذي يتعلق بحماية البيئة من خلال الحفاظ على قاعدة الموارد المادية والبيولوجية وعلى النظم البيئية.
وقد وضعت لجنة الأمم المتحدة للتنمية المستدامة دليلاً يتكون من 58 مؤشراً يشمل جميع أبعاد التنمية المستدامة، وبناءً على هذا الدليل يمكن التعرف على التقدم الذي تم إحرازه في جوانب التنمية المستدامة في أي دولة. ويقوم هذا الكتاب بتحليل المؤشرات الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والبيئية والمؤسسية للتنمية المستدامة في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، استناداً إلى جملة من هذه المؤشرات العالمية.
ويبين الكتاب أبرز التحديات التي تعوق التنمية المستدامة لدولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، وجهود الدولة في سبيل مواجهتها من خلال وضع الاستراتيجيات المناسبة، وعقد الاتفاقيات الدولية، وسن التشريعات والقوانين، وإقامة المؤسسات الكفيلة بإنجاز أهداف التنمية المستدامة وتذليل معوقاتها، كما يشيد الكتاب بالدور الإماراتي في دعم مبادئ وتطبيقات التنمية المستدامة على الصعيدين العربي والعالمي.
