وتدور فصول هذا الكتاب على موضوع "المعرفة التاريخية"، فيعرض أسئلة حيوية وراهنة مثل: هل توجد حقائق تاريخية؟ ما الشروط التي تجعلنا نعتقد أن ما نعرفه عن الماضي صحيح؟ كيف يمكن أن نؤمن بأن حجة تاريخية معينة هي حجة صحيحة؟ هل المعرفة التاريخية موضوعية؟...
والكتاب، في خلاصته الأخيرة، محاولة للإجابة عن هذه الأسئلة وعن غيرها أيضاً، خصوصاً تلك التي تتصدى لمعرفة قوانين التاريخ التي تتحكم بمساراته وتطوراته.
