يحاول هذا الكتاب مناقشة أهمية المعرفة، والتفكير العلمي، ويذهب إلى نقاش موضوعة الموضوعية، وعلاقتها بالمعرفة العلمية، في محاولة لفهم كيفية اشتغال البحث العلمي، في العلوم الإنسانية والاجتماعية، استناداً إلى الفكر العلمي الحديث، المنطلق من مبدأ الضرورة التي احتاجت في مواجهتها (المواجهة بين الفكر العلمي الحديث والفكر الديني، منذ انطلاقة الثورة الفرنسية)، إلى إبعاد الوعي الإنساني، أي إيجاد انفصام إنساني، بين إنسان موضوع للعلم وإنسان يبحث فيه، جعل الإنسان الأول موضوع العلم، شيئاً جامداً، الإنسان الفرد والجماعة، حتى يتمكن الإنسان الآخر (مفهوم التميز) من درسه. الثاني جعل بلا وعي، وكان عليه أن ينطلق من واقع أنه يمتلك دماغاً فيزيولوجياً وظيفياً يتحرك من خلاله في البحث، إنه ضرب الإنساني بالإنساني، وتحويله إلى أشياء مخصوصة، لأناس مخصوصين، علماء منجمين، يفرطون في القطع والحكم باسم العلم الإنساني الاجتماعي الذي لم يمتلك مشروعيته العلمية حتى الآن.
