بأسلوب ساخر يتسم بالاقتصاد في السرد، وتكثيف الحوار، تشحذ أميلي نوتومْب مبضعا مسنون الشفرة لتشريح عالم الشغل في يوميموطو، وهي شركة يابانية تلتهم العاملين فيها، فإذا هم يلتهمون بعضهم بعضا على قدر مراتبهم، وإذا كل واحد منهم جلاد وضحية في الآن نفسه، باستثنائها هي، الأوروبية المتعاقدة التي لا تزال تعيش على مخزون عاطفي من أيام طفولتها بكَنْصاي، إحدى المقاطعات اليابانية، حيث ولدت وترعرعت. فموقعها في أسفل السلم الوظيفي لم يكن يسمح لها إلا بتلقي الأوامر، حتى المهين منها… دون نقاش.
هذه الرواية، التي نقلها المخرج الفرنسي ألان كورنو إلى السينما عام 2002، هي أكثر أعمال نوتومْب التصاقا بسيرتها الذاتية.
بطلة الرواية الشابة أنهت دراستها الجامعية، ولكونها عاشت في اليابان وإتقانها للغة اليابانية فلقد حصلت على عقد عمل لمدة عامٍ في شركة تجارية مرموقة تُسمى “يوميموتو.
