ولدت إيميلي نوثومب في مدينة كوبه اليابانيّة لدبلوماسي بلجيكي، عاشت في اليابان حتى عمر الخامسة، بعدها انتقلت إلى الصين ونيويورك وبنغلاديش وبورما ولاوس، إميلي سليلة عائلة سياسيّة بامتياز فهي ابنة شقيق وزير خارجية بلجيكا السابق كارلوس فيريناند نوثومب وحفيدة الكاتب والسياسي اليمينيّ بيير نوثومب.
نشرت إميلي روايتها الأولى نظافة قاتل عام 1992، وبعدها بدأت إميلي تنشر قصائدها ومؤلفاتها تباعاً سنة بعد سنة، أثناء وجودها في اليابان دخلت نوثومب مدرسة محليّة وتعلّمت اللغة اليابانيّة، وعند بلوغها عامها الخامس انتقلت مع عائلتها إلى الصين، وفي سن 17 انتقلت للعيش في بروكسيل وهناك درست فقه اللغة في جامعة بروكسل الحرة أثناء تواجدها في وطنها الأم شعرت إيميلي بغربة شديدة، لاحقاً ورغم معارضة عائلتها انتقلت للعمل في شركة يابانيّة في العاصمة طوكيو، تحدثت عن تجربتها هذه في كتابها ذهول ورهبة.

دفعت هذه الرواية، بالكاتبة الروائية البلجيكية "آميلي نوثومب" إلى الواجهة، ولا تزال، فقد حازت هذه الرواية على عدة جوائز هامّة (رينيه فاليه، آلان فورنييه)، وتحوّلت إلى فيلم سينمائي أخرجه روغييري، واقتبسها للمسرح ديديه لانغ، وللأوبرا دانيال شال.
عبر حكاية الكاتب بريتكستا طاش، الحائز على جائزة نوبل، وحواراته مع مجموعة من الصحافيين، تغوص نوثومب في السراديب المظلة للنفس البشريّة، مقدّمة نصاً متعدد الأصوات حافلاً بصراع الرؤى والأفكار.
بلغة حادة قاسية، مضحكة وكاريكاتيرية أيضاً، ترسم مصائر الشخصيّات، وخاصة شخصيّة طاش الكاتب الذي كان يظنّ أنه يمكن أنه يتحكّم بمصيره، بعد أن بلغ الــ 83 عاماً، والذي يتوقع موته في خلال شهرين، ولكن فتاة صحافيّة تكشف عقم هذا التفكير وتعيد طرح حياته أمامه، بما فيها من الكذب والقسوة، والأوهام... بحيث يضطر للزحف أمامها طالباً إليها الكفّ عن كشف تهافت أفكاره، وإنهاء حياته.
رواية مكتوبة بلغة حوارية مباشرة، خالية من مطوّلات السرد والوصف، لتدخل مباشرة إلى الأفكار التي أرادت نوثومب أن توصلها القارئ.
