بطلة الرواية الشابة أنهت دراستها الجامعية،ولكونها عاشت فى اليابان وإتقانها للغة اليابانية فلقد حصلت على عقد عمل لمدة عام فى شركة تجارية مرموقة تسمى "يوميموتو" والبطلة الشابة المفتونة بإمبراطورية الشمس المشرقة تتطلع إلى النجاح فى اليابان، لكن بداياتها تظل مرتبكة ومتعثرة، فتانى من خيبة الأمل وتكتشف ثقافة لم تكن تعرف عنها شيئاً على الإطلاق، إن مسعاها نحو النجاح يصطدم دائماً بإستياء رؤسائها مما يؤدى الى تكلس أحلامها وتحبطها فى كابوس طويل كان لابد أن ينتهى بسقوطها المحتم الى اسفل الدرج الهرمى والوظيفى للشركة، وفى أخر المطاف تنحدر من درجة مترجمة التى أرادت أن تشعلها إلى درجة مشرقة على مراحيض الشركة، أن البطلة التى تتماهى هنا مع الكاتبة تستسلم طوال الرواية لعدد لا حصر له من الإهانات والمضايقات مما يجعلها تفجر طرائق فى السرد تخصها وحدها، تتسم بالسخرية اللاذعة والصادمة المتأرجحة بين الذهول والرعدة والضحك والأسى، والرعب والاستسلام للصرامة الشرسة التى تنظرإليها من عل.
