لكن أسوأها كان، تلك المرة التي عدت فيها بشكل غير متوقع في الصباح الباكر من زيارة للمدينة، وقبيل الوصول إلى المنزل، بالكاد نجوت من ثلاث كسرات جصية متساقطة. من علو شاهق، عند قدمي. كم كان مرعباً لي مشاهدة ثلاثة همج، وأنا أنظر إلى الأعلى، وهم متسرولين بالجينز الأزرق على وشك البدء بالهجوم الذي طال التهديد به. أجل، بالفعل. مفكراً بتلك الكسرات الجصية الثلاث، أنا ومدخنتي كانت لدينا مهارب ضيقة. مضى الآن ما يقارب سبع سنوات منذ أن صرت ملازماً لمنزلي. أصدقائي من المدينة كلهم يتساءلون لم لا آتي لزيارتهم، كما في الأوقات السابقة. إنهم يظنون أنني قد أصبحت شخصاً فظاً وغير اجتماعي.. البعض يقول إنني شبيه بكاره بشر مُطحلب عجوز. بينما الحقيقة طوال الوقت كانت، أنني ببساطة حارس دائم على مدخنتي العجوز المطحلبة؛ وهذا محسوم بيني وبين مدخنتي، أننا أنا ومدخنتي لن نستسلم أبداً.
